The women’s Museum: An institute for the future

This wednesday we went to the Women's Museum with some other junior students. The Women’s Museum it’s about the american woman. Using the technology and interactive media, the museum expanded our understanding of women’s participation in shaping of the nation history. This is also the only comprehensive national American women’s history museum. It was very informative.

Nessa quarta-feira nos fomos para o Women's Museum com outras estudantes junior. O Women's Museum e sobre a mulher americana. Usando tecnologia e media interativa, o museu expandiu nosso entendimento sobre a participacao das mulheres na formacao da historia da nacao. Esse e tambem o unico compreensivo museu nacional americano da historia das mulheres. Isso foi muito informativo.

The Women's Museum™ began as the dream of one woman, Cathy Bonner. Her dream became reality with the help of corporations, foundations, governments and individuals across the nation.
The Women's Museum's 70,000 square foot building provides a home for programs and exhibits where people can honor the past and explore the contributions of women throughout history.

Teachers at St. Alcuin's

This morning we went to Elementary School and did our presentation about Brazil for more two classes. The first presentation was more dynamic but the second we had more participation. Manu danced capoeira again and in the second part most children woke up and started to try how to do that. During the break we went to tour the school.The Spanish Teacher called us to talk a little bit in Portuguese to her class. After the walk we did the second presentation for kids and teenagers. It was interesting make contact with different people, like some oldest and youngest. It was a good experience that I loved .

Essa amanha fomos ao colegio de ensino fundamental e fizemos a apresentacao do Brasil para mais duas turmas, de sexta e sete serie. A primeira apresentacao foi mais dinamica, mas na segunda tivemos mais a participacao de todos. Manu dancou novamente capoeira, e na segunda apresentacao mais de dez criancas levataram e tentaram dancar. Durante o intervalo de uma apresentacao para a outra fomos conhecer a escola. A professora de espanhol nos chamou para falar um pouco em portugues para sua turma. Depois de andar, fizemos nossa segunda apresentacao para criancas e adolescentes. Foi muito interesante poder ter o contado com pessoas de diferentes, umas mais velhas e outras mais novas. Uma experiencia muito boa. Adorei!

The Trinity River

Today Mr. Scott, Mrs. Alex and Mr. Smith took us to the Trinity Audubon Center (http://www.trinityriveraudubon.org). We had to wear boots because it had rained a lot and it was a little muddy.

Hoje, Philip, Sra. Alex e Sr. Smith nos levaram ao Trinity Audubon Center (http://www.trinityriveraudubon.org/) . Tivemos que usar botas porque havia chovido e havia um pouco de lama.

We learned that in the past, that area was a deposit of waste and they have been planting trees and other species. now everything was recycled. Before go there, Mr. Scott taught us some things about the Trinity River. First, we saw some trees with green bags surrounded them for study after (we didn’t do this). Because of the rain, there was flooded and we can see the phases of the river.

Mr. Scott nos falou que antes era um deposito de lixo e tudo agora e recilcado. Antes de ir, Mr. Scott nos ensinou algumas coisas sobre o rio Trinity. Primeiro, vimos algumas arvores envolvidas com bolsas verdes para estudar depois (nao fizemos isso). Por causa da chuva, tava alagado e podemos ver as fases do rio.

We went to see the Trinity River and there came a doubt: what is floating, a snake or a piece of wood? We discovered when that thing dove twice. And on the waterfront, we saw a little snake. I didn’t stay there to see with it was a venomous snake or not.

Quando fomos ver o rio Trinity surgiu uma duvida: aquiko que esta boiando e uma cobra ou um toco de Madeira? Descobrimos quando ele mergulhou duas vezes. E na margem, vimos uma pequina cobra. Eu nao fiquei para ver se era venenosa ou nao.

Then, we went to see more things in the other side. There we saw many types of plants, with red berries, some flowers and with red leaves. And we saw a plant like a bamboo with a green and small lizard climbing them. When we look at the sky, we saw some birds flying. We can’t see with was an eagle or a hawk because the sun was shining brightly.

Entao, nos fomos ver outras coisas no outro lado. Vimos muitos tipos de planta, com frutas vermelhas, algumas flores e folhas vermelhas. E vimos plantas parecidas com bamboo com um pequeno e verde lagarto escalando elas. Quando olhamos para o ceu, vimos alguns passaros voando. Nao podemos ver se era uma aguia ou um falcao porque o sol estava brilhando intensamente.

We saw only one bird and it flew away. When we finished the little tour inside of the mangrove, we went to a little museum. We saw many pictures of birds and their songs, we did a little river in the sand box, and we saw some fishes. We saw bones, horns and the pelage of the animals that live there like bobcat and coyote.

Vimos apenas um unico passaro e ele voou. Quando nos terminamos de fazer o tour no mangue, fomos para um pequeno museu. Ouvimos muitas fotos de passaros e seus cantos, fizemos um pequeno rio na caixa de areia e vimos alguns peixes. Vimos ossos, chifres e a pelagem dos animais que vivem la como o bobcat e o coyote.

We listened the calls of the frogs and some spiders there. After all, we came back to the UA to come back home with the host sisters. Thank you so much to go with us Mr. Scott Mrs. Alex and Mr. Smith!

The Food Bank

So, today we went to the North Texas Food Bank (www.northtexasfoodbank.org). It was very great and rewarding because we know that what we did will help many poor and needy families. Do you know what the North Texas Food Bank is? And what they do? The Food Bank is a non-profit hunger relief organization founded in 1982 that distributes donated, purchased, and prepared foods through a network of feeding programs of North Texas.

Então, hoje nós fomos ao North Texas Food Bank (www.northtexasfoodbank.org). Foi ótimo e muito gratificante porque nós sabemos, que o que fizemos hoje vai ajudar muitas familias pobres e nessecitadas. Você sabe o que é o North Texas Food Bank? E o que eles fazem? O Food Bank é uma organização sem fins lucrativos fundada em 1982, que luta contra a fome, distribuindo alimentos doados, comprados e preparados por uma rede de programas de alimentação do norte do Texas.

When we arrived there, we saw the Food Bank video about the new campaign “Close the Gap” before starting the work with the donated food in the gigantic warehouse. We sorted the potato chips and the taco bell beans in the boxes, and we worked as a group and we were preparing the boxes very fast.

Quando nós chegamos no local, assistimos o video do Food Bank sobre sua nova campanha “Close the Gap”, antes de começar o trabalho com os alimentos doados no gigante galpão. O nosso trabalho foi colocar as batatas chips e os feijões da Taco Bell nas suas devidas caixas. Nós trabalhamos em grupo e preparamos as caixas o mais rápido possivel.

We had a break to eat something, but we came back to work quickly, and a few minutes later we finished all the boxes, after we cleaned the place that we used. Our captain said that we did a wonderful work, and after he said the big result, WE DID 8,300 MEALS! I really liked the Food Bank and I want to thank Mrs. Alex, Mr. Phillip and the great Mr. Smith.

Nós tivemos um intervalo para comer alguma coisa, e voltamos logo para trabalhar, e poucos minutos depois, acabamos todas as caixas e depois limpamos o espaço que usamos para trabalhar. Nosso capitão nos disse que fizemos um trabalho maravilhoso, e depois, ele nos falou o grande resultado, NÓS FIZEMOS 8.300 REFEIÇÕES! Eu realmente gostei muito desta experiencia no Food Bank e quero agradecer a Sra. Alex, Sr. Phillip e o grande Sr. Smith.

A Day at the Paper

The other day the UA Bear Facts staff was lucky to welcome the Piedade students. The staff was happy to help the Brazilians on a four page paper to take back with them. After assigning the students their articles, we showed them how publishing the Bear Facts works. While the Brazilians got to learn something about life working on a newspaper, the UA students got to learn a little about their life in Brazil.
Thankfully Ms. Nipp supplied us all with some lunch, and we got the opportunity to spend even more time with them! I know I certainly enjoyed our time working on the project together, and I hope our guests did as well!

Ontem o pessoal do jornal teve a chance de passar um tempo bom com os estudantes brasileiros. A equipe está ajudando os estudantes brasileiros com o jornal para enviar para o Brazil. O jornal vai ser concetrado, principalmente, em torno das atividade que eles participaram durante a visita aqui. Com almoço fornecido pela Sra. Nipp, a equipe e os estudantes puderam conversar e ajudar os brasileiros.

Dallas Aquarium

Today we visited the Dallas Aquarium. Most of the animals came from the Amazon.We saw not just fish, but many kinds of animals like a sloth sleeping in a tree. The three-toed sloth in the U.S. is a rainforest favorite. They have a lot of birds, and the most attractive was the Scarlet Macaws. It is a bird that came from the Amazon like the Double-yellow Headed Amazon Parrot. When we saw the birds, one of them accidentally "did its business" on Leo's arm. He was not too happy, but we all laughed. My favorite animal that we saw today was the Sea Otter. We could see them through the glass and they did the same things I was doing. As we continued, we saw the flamingos. There were two flamingos fighting, but I do not know why. My other favorite animal was the Jaguar. Jaguars are not normally animals of captivity so it was interesting to see them in the Aquarium.
When we were coming back to the school, we passed the street where President John F. Kennedy was shot in 1963. We parked by the red building and Mr. Smith told us everything about the murder. He showed us the second window of the red building facing the street which was where Lee Harvey Oswald was when he shot Kennedy. On the road, there is an "X" to mark where Kennedy died. It was very interesting.

Boy's Day!!! Saturday, Oct. 17

When you have 4 daughters and only one son, you have few opportunities to do "boy stuff." Hosting the boys from Bahia gave us an excuse. When Julien and Leonardo went to the State Fair last week, they told us they liked the car show the best ("We looo ve cars!") so we decided to surprise them by taking them on a tour of the Texas Motor Speedway!!


Quando você tem quatro filhas e apenas um filho, tem poucas oportunidades de fazer ‘coisas para meninos’. Recebendo os meninos da Bahia nos deu esta desculpa. Quando Julien e Leonardo foram à Feira do Texas semana passada nos disseram que adoraram ver as exposições de automóveis (adoooramos carros!). Assim resolvemos fazê-los uma surpresa, levando-os para um tour do Texas Motor Speedway!

We took another boy with us whose family is from Brazil, so he helped "interpret" whenever our English/Portuguese barrier became a problem. I told them it brought me back to my childhood, growing up with 4 brothers and lots of guy friends in high school. :)

Levamos ainda um outro menino cuja família é Brasileira e que nos ajudaria como intérprete caso a barreira do Inglês/Português se tornasse um problema. Eu disse a eles que isso trouxe lembranças de minha infância, pois fui criada com quatro irmãos e muitos amigos meninos no ensino médio.

We got to see the race cars practicing around the track, up close and personal, and we went way up to the $100,000-per-year luxury box suites where we could see the whole track and the finish line. Here is a photo of all of us at Victory Lane:

Conseguimos ver bem de perto e de maneira pessoal o treino dos carros de corrida na pista. Fomos ainda até aos boxes de luxo (US$100.000 por ano ) de onde pode-se ver toda a pista e a linha de chegada. Aqui está uma foto nossa no Victory Lane.

Later that evening, we were invited by a Naval Academy parent to go to the SMU/Navy Game! This was Leo and Julien's first football game, since we didn't go to the Jesuit game the night before. We were very, very cold but we had a great time! The Naval Academy had parachuters come in and the Blue Angels flew over before the game. Then George W. Bush came out to do the coin toss. It was a close game, very exciting, and the Navy finally won in overtime with a field goal. Here are all the boys at the tailgate party, where we met some of the midshipmen and their parents:

Mais à noite, fomos convidados pai de uma aluna que trabalha na Marinha para ver o jogo da SMU x Marinha Americana! Para Leonardo e Julien este foi o primeiro jogo de futebol Americano já que não tinham ido ao jogo na escola Jesuít da noite anterior. Estava muito, muito frio mas nos divertimos muito! A Academia Naval enviou paraquedistas e os Blue Angels sobrevoaram a área um pouco antes do jogo. Depois, George W. Bush apareceu para tirar a sorte com uma moeda. A disputa foi acirrada, o jogo empolgante e finalmente a Marinha ganhou na prorogação. Aqui estão os meninos na comemoração onde ainda encontramos alguns oficiais e seus pais.

Girls Night!

Saturday was so much fun! My birthday was the night before but part of my gift was to stay at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown and we had a girls night! We ate dinner and then watched The Proposal.
Sabado foi muito divertido! Meu aniversario foi na noite anterior mas uma parte dos meus presentes foi ficar no Hotel Hyatt no centro da cidade e nos tivemos uma noite das garotas! Nos jantamos e assistimos The Proposal.
After that we went swimming on the roof of the hotel. After swimming we went to Scare Grounds (Haunted House) and that was sooo scary! Brenda didn't get scared at all but I was practically crying hahaha.
Depois disso nos fomos nadar na cobertura do hotel. Depois de nadar nos fomos para uma Casa Mal Assombrada e isso foi muuito assustador! Brenda nao se assustou tanto assim mas eu estava praticamente chorando hahaha.
Once we all finished sprinting through the haunted house, we went back to the hotel, ate some cake and went to sleep. It was an awesome night!!
Uma vez terminado a correria na Casa Mal Assombrada, nos voltamos para o Hotel, e comemos bolo antes de ir dormir. Foi uma noite incrivel!!

NASA

Before going to the Johnson's Space Center on Monday (October 19th), Mrs. Nipp took us to have breakfast at IHOP (International House of Pancakes). Thanks Mrs. Nipp, it was delicious. When we finished we went to Space Center and we watched some movies about space trips, astronauts and rockets, but one especially got my attention because a wrong calculation made the rocket explode and the crew died.

Antes de ir ao Centro Espacial da NASA, Cecilia nos levou para tomar café no IHOP (Casa Internacional de Panquecas). Obrigada, Cecilia, estava delicioso. Quando terminamos, fomos ao Centro Espacial e assistimos alguns vídeos sobre viagens espaciais, astronautas e foguetes, mas um especialmente chamou minha atenção, pois um erro de cálculo fez um foguete explodir e a tripulação morreu.

Then we had to stand up for 30 minutes on the line to go to the “Nasa tram Tour” and that was not funny at all.

Daí, tivemos que ficar numa fila durante 30 minutos esperando um trenzinho, e isso não foi nem um pouco divertido.
When we finally got on the train (tram) we had a NASA tour and the driver explained us about the buildings and everything around us. After a few minutes he stopped and we entered in a building and we went up 87 steps to listen to a speecher who told us about the man's first trip to the moon. It was very interesting because we were in the Nasa Control room (the oldest).

Quando finalmente o trenzinho chegou, fizemos um tour pela NASA e o motorista explicou sobre os prédios e tudo a nossa volta. Depois de alguns minutos ele parou e nós entramos num prédio e subimos 87 degraus, e lá ouvimos um funcionário falar sobre a primeira viagem do homem à lua. Foi bem interessante pois estávamos no Centro de Controle da NASA (o mais antigo).
Then we had to go into another building where we saw the astronaut's training area and a huge rocket. That was awesome! Later on we went to the NASA store and as we didn't have much time (only 10 minutes) we bought few things. We went back to Dallas the same day. Everybody was too tired because it was a long trip!

Depois fomos em outro prédio onde vimos a área de treinamento dos astronautas e um grande foguete. Muito legal! Mais tarde fomos à loja da NASA, mas como só tínhamos 10 minutos, compramos poucas coisas. Voltamos para Dallas no mesmo dia. Todos estavam muito cansados porque foi uma viagem longa.

Traveling to Houston

On Sunday afternoon we met to go to Houston at Ursuline Academy. Dr. Moody drove us all the way there. It was very nice of you Dr. Moody. Thank you!

No domingo à tarde nos encontramos na escola para irmos para Houston. Dr. Moody dirigiu o carro até lá. Muito obrigada Dr. Moody!

There was too much traffic, so we had a long drive and he had to have some fun. We played many games (In English, though) like “I went to the moon”, we had fun and learned new words. And, Dr. Moody, thank you for helping everybody on their turns. You have got such a good memory!

O tráfego estava intenso, então teríamos muito tempo e tínhamos que nos divertir. Fizemos algumas brincadeiras (em inglês) como "Eu fui para a lua e levei...", nos divertimos e aprendemos novas palavras. E, Dr. Moody, obrigada por nos ajudar. Você tem boa memória!

Finally, when we got there, Mrs. Nipp took us to a restaurant named Black Eyed Pea, and we had some delicious food. Thanks Mrs. Nipp!

Finalmente, quando chegamos lá, Cecilia nos levou a um restaurante de nome "Black Eyed Pea", e comemos uma comida deliciosa. Obrigada, Cecilia.

After that we went to the wonderful hotel Mrs. Nipp took us. But then about 1am, Priscila P. got really sick and we didn't sleep very well. Ayalla helped us to get her back to bed. She was feeling better about 3 o'clock in the morning. We could sleep a little bit 'till 6:30am.

I am glad she is better now.

Depois disso fomos ao hotel maravilhoso que Cecilia nos levou. Cerca de 1:00 da manhã, Pri Paiva passou mal e acabamos não dromindo muito bem. Ayalla nos ajudou a botar ela de volta para a cama. Ela se sentiu melhor umas 3 da manhã. Dormimos um pouco até 6:30 da manhã.

Ainda bem que ela está melhor agora.

Saturday, October 17 th.

Today I went to St. Monica’s School where Rachel, my youngest host sister, goes to school. It was very special because it was a carnival’s day. It was very different, interesting and fun.
Hoje fui à escola Santa Mônica onde Rachel, minha irmã mais nova, estuda. Foi um dia especial porque eles montaram um parque de diversões na escola. Eu achei muito diferente, interessante e divertido.
Later on, I went home with Priscila T who spent the afternoon at Sara’s. At night Manu picked us up to have dinner at her host family’s. While Mrs. Frymire was cooking dinner we were playing Guitar Hero, a funny and interesting game. I didn’t Know how to play very well, but I loved playing it! Sara and Haley (Manu’s host sister) are very good players and are also very funny. I got to know them better.
Mais tarde fui para minha casa com Priscila T, que passou toda a tarde comigo. À noite, Manu foi nos buscar para jantarmos juntas na casa de sua familia. Enquanto a Sra. Frymire preparava o jantar, jogávamos Guitar Hero, um jogo muito divertido e engraçado. Eu não sabia como jogar muito bem, mas adorei! Sara e Haley ( irmã de Manu) são muito boas neste jogo e também são muito divertidas. Pude conhecê-las melhor.
Dinner was delicious. Manu’s host mother is very nice and talkative. I love her. Almost 9pm we went to Sonic with Carol C and Priscila T. All of them spent the night at my host family’s and we had so much fun. I loved it.
O jantar estava uma delícia, a mãe de Manu é muito legal e extrovertida. Adorei ela. Em torno de umas 9 h Sara foi nos buscar e fomos ao Sonic com Carol C e Priscila T. Todas dormiram em minha casa e nos divertimos muito. Amei!

Guitar Hero

Priscila P and Manu A's first time to play the video game "Guitar Hero" at Manu's house (the Frymire's house). Priscila T is filming. In the game, each person has a guitar that has buttons instead of strings. The object of the game is to push the correct button when the note on the screen appears.

China adventure day

Today we had such an adventure day. The American girls who are going to China next month had such an especial day. And so did I.

Hoje tivemos um dia de aventura. As americanas que vão para a China no próximo mês tiveram um dia muito especial, e eu também.

At 9am we all met at the global village and went to a Tai Chi Chuan Class. I liked watching it. At 10am we left school to go to a wonderful massage (reflexology). When we got there we had such a nice feet massage. That was totally relaxing.
Às 9h nos encontramos na sala de educação global e tivmeos uma aula de Tai Chi Chuan. Eu gostei de ver. Às 10h saímos da escola em direção a uma clínica de massagem chinesa (reflexologia).

After that we went to a chinese restaurant and had all kind of Chinese food. It was delicious. I learned that in China you are supposed to serve the person sitting by you before serving yourself. How polite!
We tried some hot tea, but I didn't like it. Actually, I don't drink much tea even in Brazil.
Depois disso, fomos a um restaurante Chinês e provamos todo o tipo de comida Chinesa. Delicioso. Eu aprendi que na china você tem que primeiro servir a pessoa ao seu lado antes de se servir. Que educação!

Provamos o chá, mas eu não gostei. Na verdade, nem no Brasil eu bebo chá.

I am wondering what are my students doing.... Hey, Brazilian students, publish what is going on the weekend, ok? You don't have to wait until monday to post, please. We are curious about you all.

Estou imaginando o que meus alunos estão fazendo.... Estudantes Brasileiros, publiquem o que está acontecendo no final de semana, ok? Vocês não tem que esperar até segunda-feira para postar, por favor. Estamos curiosos.

Tomorrow we are leaving to Houston. I am very excited!

Amanhã iremos para Houston. Estou super animada!

October 16th

Friday was an exciting day for the Brazilians! During school, they worked on relief blocks for printmaking and later on journalism. At lunch, I tried to Skype with some friends in Brazil like Daniel V, Vini L, and Rebecca L. Unfortunately I did not get to because I was in a hurry to talk to a teacher, but Margaret S, Stephanie H, and Ariane L were able to! After school, Priscila P and I were watching TV when suddenly Priscila got excited and ran to the window. After investigating, I discovered she was closely watching two squirrels. After explaining to her that these furry little animals were called "Squirrels" and that they were not pets, Priscila was in shock. She loved them! I had forgotten they did not have squirrels in Brazil

That day the host students were excited to show the Brazilians what Americans do on Friday nights. That means it's time for American high school football! Laura F and I got ready with Carol C, Priscila P, Emmanuele A, and some other friends. After the long process of deciding what to wear (the Brazilian girls ended up wearing heavy coats because it is so cold for them), we headed to the Jesuit football game against Plano West. Jesuit is a brother school of Ursuline, so we went to cheer on the Jesuit Rangers! Emmanuele A was very excited to see the football game and especially enjoyed seeing live touchdowns! Meanwhile, Laura F and I were so excited to introduce our friends at the game to our new "sisters"!

Gorg pumpkins?

Mrs. Betty (the UA principal) invited me to have dinner with her tonight. We went to a restaurant called "Cuba Libre". When we got there, what a coincidence, we met Brenda and her host family celebrating her host sister's birthday. How nice! Happy Birthday Elizabeth!

Sra. Betty (diretora da escola) me convidou para jantar hoje à noite. Nós fomos a um restaurante chamado "Cuba Libre". Quando chegamos lá, que coincidência, encontramos Brenda e sua família hospedeira comemorando o aniversário da irmã. Que jóia! Feliz aniversário Elizabeth!

Mrs. Betty ate some salad with a passion fruit dressing she said it was delicious. I had a churrasco fajita which was really good too.

Sra. Betty comeu salada ao molho de maracujá, que ela disse estar maravilhosa. Eu comi Churrasco fajitas que estava muito bom também.

Actually before we started eating, Brenda brought us some birthday cake. So, we got our dessert before our main course. That was funny! But we were good girls and we saved them so we could eat later on.

Na verdade, antes de começarmos a comer, Brenda nos trouxe bolo do aniversário. Ou seja, a sobremesa chegou antes do jantar. Engraçado! Mas, fomos boas meninas e guardamos para depois do jantar.

Well, obviously, after eating all this good cake, we needed some water but the waiter couldn't find the water! That's is right, I am not being a silly foreign. He told us "I am sorry I can't find the water. Wait a minute and I'll look for it".

I was glad that no longer after that he found the water and brought us some. That was hilarious. We laughed a bunch.

Bom, obviamente, após comer todo esse bolo bom, precisamos beber água, mas o garçon náo conseguia encontrar a água. isso mesmo, eu não sou uma gringa louca. Ele nos disse "Desculpa, mas eu não estou encontrando a água. Espere um minuto que vou procurar." (Eles servem a água numa jarra que fica passando de mesa em mesa na mão de cada garçon. Ele não sabia onde estava essa jarra.) Fiquei feliz pois ele não levou muito tempo para achar a jarra da água e nos trazer. Foi hilário. Rimos muito.

After this wonderful meal, Mrs. Betty told me she wants to take me to a fancy grocery store. At first I didn't understand because I couldn't image how fancy an ordinary grocery store could be.

Well, but I did understand what she was talking about when I got at the Central Market because I saw some weird stuff. I mean...personal watermelon(?), gorg pumpkins, Budda's hand (??), grab apple, orange caulliflower, orange melon, 40 types of olive oil, alive lobster, all types of cheese, coffee beans, candies that one couldn't even think of it....

Depois dessa maravilhosa refeição, Sra. Betty me dissse que queria me levar numa mercearia (mercadinho). Primeiro eu não entendi muito bem, pois não poderia imaginar o qual invocada poderia ser um mercadinho.

Bem, quando cheguei no Central Market eu entendi o que ela quis dizer, pois vi coisas bem estranhas. Quero dizer....melancia pessoal (porção única), abóbora de todas as cores e formas, mão do Buda, maça pequenina (de uma bocada só), couve-flor laranja, 40 tipos de azeite, lagosta viva, todos os tipos de queijos, grãos de café, balas, coisas que ninguém poderia imaginar que existem.

I have to say that people there are the nicest! All the employees were so nice to us. Ebert (picture) caught a lobster right away to have his picture taken with me. Wonderful! He didn't know we had just had dinner, so he gave us some shrimp with a special sauce. He handled us 4, but we only could have one. We were so full! Sorry Ebert! I must tell you it was really delicious, though!

Devo dizer que as pessoas nesse "mercadinho" são mujito simpáticas! Todos os funcionários foram muito legais comigo. Ebert (na foto) pegou uma lagosta viva no tanque pra tirar foto comigo. Maravilha! Ele não sabia que havíamos acabado de jantar, então nos deu camarão com um molho especial. Nos deu 4 unidades, mas cada uma de nós só comeu um camarão. Estávamos empachadas. Desculpa Ebert! Mas devo te dizer que estava delicioso!

We got some milk and bread. Then, I told Mrs. Betty how badly I needed some earphones with Mic, so she took me to the Super target store so I could get those. We were glad they had them.

Compramos leite e pão. Daí, falei a Sra. Betty o quanto precisava de fone com microfone para o computador, então ela me levou ao Super Target para comprá-los. Ficamos felizes por termos encontrado-os.

Well all this adventure took place while I was telling Mrs. Betty how hard was being in Missouri when I was 17 year old and had so many important decisions to make..... She liked hearing all my crazy stories.

Bem toda essa aventura aconteceu enquanto eu contava a Sra. Betty como foi foi difícil estar no Estado do Missouri com apenas 17 anos e ter que tomar importante decisões....Ela gostou de ouvir todas as minhas histórias loucas.

Thanks Mrs. Betty. I really appreciated. I had such a wonderful time. I hope we can do that some time again.

I had never thought how fun would be going out to dinner with the principal. It was amazing!

Mavs x Pistons Game

Oh my gosh! Yesterday we went to the Mavericks game, it was fantastic.

Before going to the game Ms. Cecilia took us to have a very nice dinner at a Chinese restaurant, hmmm....delicious.

Oh meu Deus! Ontem fomos ao jogo dos Mavericks, foi fantástico.

Antes de irmos ao jogo, Cecilia nos levou para jantar bem num restaurante Chinês, hummm....delicioso.

After that we headed to the American Airlines Center where we watched the NBA basketball game. The weather was a little cold, but we were too excited to be cold. We arrived 50 minutes earlier, so we were able to spend a little time at the Mavericks store before actually go into the stadium to see the "show".

Depois disso, nos encaminhamos para o American Airlines Center onde assistimos ao jogo de basquete da NBA. O tempo estava um pouco frio, mas estávamos muito animados para sentir frio. Chegamos ao estádio 50 minuos antes do jogo, então tivemos tempo para passar na loja dos Mavericks antes do "show"começar.

Then we finally got to our sits and we were fascinated...the stadium is awesome. We took many good pictures. Manu and I were very excited. The others liked very much, but as they don't know very much about basketball we had to be "teachers" and explain everything about the game. Cool!

Então, quando finalmente achamos nossos assentos, ficamos fascinados....o estádio é maravilhoso. Manu e eu estávamos muito entusiasmados. Os outros gostaram muito, mas como não sabem nada de basquete, tivemos que ser "professores" e explicar tudo sobre o jogo. Legal!

When the Mavs got on court everybody started screaming. Emmanuele went crazy because she was so excited. As you can see, we are having so much fun.

Quando os Mavs entraram na quadra, todo mundo começou a grita. Emmanuele enlouqueceu. Como vocês podem ver, estamos nos divertindo muito.

When the game started we didn't have time to blink because the game was very interactive. We repeated all the time: Go MAVS or D-fense. At the beginning the Marvericks were losing but not for too long because they had good players like Nowitzki and Terry on court.

I really liked the beautiful cheerleaders and the strange boys dancing too.

Quando o jogo começou, não tivemos tempo nem para piscar, porque o jogo foi muito interativo. Repetíamos a todo o tempo: Vai Mavs ou Defesa. No começo, os Mavs estavam perdendo, mas não por muito tempo, pois eles tinham bons jogadores como Nowitzki e Terry na quadra.

Eu gostei muito das belas líderes de torcida e dos garotos estranhos dançando.

When the second match started the Mavs were much better getting more than 15 points ahead of the Pistons. At the end, we really want to show off, so we were cheering and jumping but the TV camera didn't see us anyway.

Well, when the game was over we were very happy because the Mavs bit the Pistons (113-88).

Quando o segundo quarto começou, os Mavs estavam muito melhores e tinham 15 pontos à frente dos Pistons. No final, queríamos aparecer no telão, então torcíamos e pulávamos, mas a camêra da Tv não nos viu mesmo assim.

Bom, quando o jogo acabou, estávamos felizes porque os Mavs derrotaram os Pistons (113-88).

Teachers for an hour (Professores por uma hora)

Today, we visited St. Monica's School and the Brazilian students became teachers for an hour. They taught second grade kids a lot about Brazil. It was such a nice experience.
Hoje, visitamos a escola Santa Mônica e os estudantes Brasileiros tornaram-se professores por uma hora. Eles ensinaram às crianças da segunda série do EF I muito sobre o Brasil. Foi uma experência muito boa!

Before leaving Bahia, teacher David (Piedade's geography teacher) and the students got a powerpoint presentation ready to be showed here in Texas. They also had history classes with teacher Ramayana. Well, here in Dallas they proved that they really learned everything before coming to the USA. They did such a good job. Thanks David and Ramayana.
Ainda na Bahia, professor David (professor de geografia da Piedade) e os alunos prepararam a apresentação no powerpoint para ser mostrada aqui no Texas. Além disso, eles também tiveram aula de história com Professor Ramayana. Aqui em Dallas, eles provaram que realmente aprenderam tudo antes de vir para os EUA. Fizeram um ótimo trabalho. Obrigada David e Ramayana.

We didn't give any detailed information during the class because we thought that since they were kids, they wouldn't be very interested about dates and stuff like that. Actually we were totally wrong. They did want to know EVERYTHING! They had really good questions like:
When was Brazil discovered?
What material do you use to build house? (How come? I mean... a seven year old kid!)

They also learned Capoeira! So they had so much fun! And we also had such a nice time!

Não demos informações detalhadas durante a aula porque pensamos que por serem crianças não se interessariam muito sobre datas e coisas assim. Na verdade, estávamos errados. Eles queriam saber TUDO! Fizeram perguntas muito boas como:
Quando o Brasil foi descoberto?
Que material vocês usam para construir casas? (Como assim? Quer dizer.....uma criança de sete anos!)
Eles também aprenderam Capoeira! Ou seja, se divertiram muito! E nós também!

Dinosaurs !

Our visit to the Texas State Fair was great. The IMAX experience (technology pioneered by Texas Instruments...) made possible the 'Dinosaurs of Patagonia' film we saw in the Science Museum. It's difficult to describe the IMAX experience, but those who have seen one know what it's about. Hard to imagine are the vast expanses of Argentinian Patagonia populated by megadinosaurs, much larger than T-Rex, something beautifully done in the fly-through views of IMAX. Nossa visita à Feira do Texas foi ótima. A experiência do IMAX (tecnologia pioneira da Texas Instruments...) tornou possível realizar o filme 'Dinosauros da Patagonia' o qual assistimos no Museu de Ciências de Dallas. É difícil descrever a experiência IMAX, mas aqueles que já tiveram esta oportunidade poderão imaginar o que seriam as vastas planícies da Patagônia Argentina povoada por megadinosauros, muito maiores do que o T-Rex, algo realizado espetacularmente nas filmagens fly-through do IMAX. This visit was inspired by the Piedade students mission to prepare themselves for the Projeto Mosaico of 2009 at their school. Their themes are Evolution and Astronomy. On the topic of evolution, I would suggest that our blog followers interested in evolution and in the commemoration of the 150th year of the publication of Darwin's revolutionary text check out The Beagle Project Blog. A replica of the original 'Beagle' is currently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with Karen, Darwin's great grand-daughter. The Beagle is re-tracing Darwin's voyage and has stopped in Salvador and is now in Paraty.

Esta visita ao Museu de Ciências de Dallas foi inspirada pelos alunos do INSP que tem a missão de se prepararem para o Projeto Mosaico de 2009, onde os temas Evolução e Astronomia estão em pauta. Quanto ao tema Evolução sugiro a aqueles que seguem este blog e se interessam pelo assunto, visitarem o blog The Beagle Project Blog. A novidade é que a bisneta de Darwin, Karen está percorrendo os passos de Darwin e encontra-se hoje em Paraty, RJ após ter passado por Salvador e Rio de Janeiro numa réplica do Beagle.

Not only does the Dallas Museum offer an IMAX projection but it also habours an important collection of fossils many of which collected from the many fossil bearing sites in West Texas. One of the most interesting exhibits had a full size T-Rex and a pterodactyl hung up from the ceiling of the same room, where visitors can 'dig' their own fossils in play pits. While Manu (left) was most impressed with the size of some of the fossil bones, I was particularly interested in the shark teeth fossil display.

O museu de Ciências de Dallas oferece também uma importante coleção de fósseis, muitos dos quais provenientes de sítios paleontológicos existentes no oeste do Texas. Assim, vimos não apenas um Tiranosuaro rex completo montado bem como um pterodáctilo pendurado do teto do Museu no meio de uma área destinada a estimular jóvens paleontólogos abrincarem de pesquisadores. Manu (na foto) ficou mais impressionada com um fóssil de fêmur, enquanto eu achei fascinante os dentes enormes de tubarões extintos.

Our visit to the grounds of the Texas State Fair took most of the day, and we had plenty of free time to roam about. We saw the most recent cars produced by the American automobile industry, farm animals, arts and crafts exhibits, and much more. Now and then we could see a colorful T-shirt popping up in the middle of the crowd which reminded us of the reason why we were having so much fun today!

Nossa visita à Feira do Texas, durou a maior parte do dia, onde pudemos experimentar muita coisa nova e passear à vontade. Pudemos ver os carros mais modernos produzidos pela indústria automobilistica norte-americana, bem como animais de fazenda, artesanato, e muito mais. Aqui e alí no meio do povo podíamos ver uma alegre camiseta colorida que nos lembrava a razão que nos havia levado a ter tanta diversão hoje!

The Texas State Fair

Today was a great day. We went to the Texas State fair. We visited the museum, the planetarium and we watched an Imax movie about dinosaurs. At the museum, we saw animals we hadn't seen at the AMNH in New York. We saw foxes, bulls and some wolves.

Hoje foi um grande dia. Fomos à Feira Estadual do Texas, onde visitamos um museu, um planetário e assistimos a um filme sobre dinossauros. No museu, vimos animais que não tínhamos visto no museu de New York. Vimos raposas, búfalos e lobos.
We also saw stones which shine at the dark light, those were very nice.
Some of the girls wished they could take some of the stones back home and Julien also would like to have one to decorate his bedroom, but that wasn't possible.

Vimos também pedras que brilhavam na luz negra, muito bonitas. As meninas queriam poder levar para casa e Julien também queria para decorar o quarto dele, mas isso não foi possível.

At the planetarium, the floor was full of stars painted on it. Then we saw interesting things about biology like the DNA code, evolution, animals and much more. We would like to thank our teachers Lara, Dori and Milena who taught us many things about evolution before coming to the USA.

No planetário, no chão haviam estrelas pintadas cobrindo-o. Daí, vimos coisas sobre Biologia como o código DNA, evolução, animais e muito mais. Gostaríamos de agradecer nossos professores Lara, Dori e Milena, que nos ensinaram coisas sobre evolução antes de vimos para os EUA.

Well, there we also heard the sound of an earthquake and a hurricane.

We saw a big white nose that sneezed every 40 seconds. Julien L and Priscila P were scared about it. We couldn't stop laughing for a whole minute.

Bem, lá também ouvimos o som de um terremoto e de um hurricane.

We saw a fake human body that shows how a real human body works. Brenda P was horrified because there was a throwing up simulator.

Vimos uma corpo humano falso que mostra como um real funciona. Brenda P ficou aterrorizada com o simulador de vômito.

Priscila T and I had a picture taken on the heat sensitive camera. That was great.

We watched an IMAX movie about dinosaurs. Actually, we learned many things about dinosaurs and how archeologists work.

Priscila T e eu tiramos uma foto na câmera sensível a calor. Maravilha.

Assistimos ao IMAX sobre dinossauros. Na verdade, aprendemos muitas coisas sobre dinossauris e como arqueologistas trabalham.

Later, we went to a car exhibition and we had many pictures taken in the cars. We all had a picture taken with Bubble beam's car (transformers) but what the girls really wanted was having a photo with the car sales guy.

mais tarde, fomos a uma mostra de carros e tiramos muitas fotos dentro deles. Tiramos uma foto com o carro dos transformers, mas o que as meninas queriam mesmo era uma foto com o vendedor.

We had feet massage on a special chair for 25 cents (Priscila T screamed at the first). I love it so I paid 50 cents to have twice times more massage than they did .
Tomamos massagem nos pés numa cadeira especial por 25 centavos (Priscila primeiro gritou). Eu amei, por isso paguei 50 centavos para ter duas vezes mais massagem que elas.

Then, we went shopping and we saw many things to buy but we didn't buy anything. After all, we went to a Mexican restaurant. We ate a lot of things like nachos, fajitas.

Finally we went back to school where our host families picked us up.

Então , fomos fazer compras, vimos muitas coisas mas não compramos nada. Depois de tudo, fomos a um restaurante Mexicano. comemos muitos nachos e fajitas.

Finalmente voltamos para a escola onde nossas famílias nos buscaram.

State Fair

Oi galera,

Nosso grupo hoje visitou a Feira do Texas. Primeiro, nós visitamos o museu “Nature e Science, onde nós vimos e aprendemos muito sobre nosso objetivo, astros e evolução. Antes de vermos um filme sobre dinossauro, que contava a origem e sua extinção, nós fomos experimentar tais comidas como: corn-dog, cheeseburguer, pizza, chá gelado, sorvete de bolinhas (Dippin Dots) e refri. Depois de assistir o filme sobre a evolução e a vida dos dinossauros, visitamos o resto da feira. Fomos ver os carros, o big Tex, um homem muito grande no centro da feira, vimos os tipos de diversões como dardo, basquete, acertar o lugarzinho correto com água e tudo mais que vocês possam imaginar. Quando deu 4:30, fomos para um restaurante Mexicano, a comida estava ótima e lá nós pudemos rir sobre tudo que tinha acontecido até agora na viajem, como a maioria dos micos de Emmanuele.

Hello guys,

Today our group visited the Texas State Fair. First we visited the museum of Nature and Science where we saw and learned a lot about our objective, astronomy and evolution. Before we saw a film about dinosaurs that talked about their origin and extinction, we went to experiment every food like: Corn-Dogs, cheeseburger, pizza, ice tea, ice cream with balls (Dippin Dots) and soda. After we watched the film about evolution and dinosaurs’ life, we visited the rest of the fair. We went to see some cars, Big Tex (a very large man in the center of the fair), games like darts, basketball, water gun targets, and much more than you can imagine. At 4:30, we went to a Mexican restaurant. The food was good and we could laugh about everything that has happened on our trip, especially Emmanuele’s embarrassing moments.
